Crimson Sunbird

In 2002, The Nature Society Singapore conducted a poll to select Singapore's national bird, and the crimson sunbird emerged as the winner with the highest number of votes. Voters were drawn to the crimson sunbird due to its petite size and vibrant red plumage, which they considered as ideal representations of the country.

The etymology of the crimson sunbird's scientific name, siparaja, traces back to Sir Stamford Raffles, who derived it from the Malay name 'burung sepah raja'. In this context, 'burong' translates to 'bird', 'sepah' refers to the sweet juice of the betel nut, and 'raja' means 'king'.

The crimson sunbird is commonly sighted in various nature reserves across Singapore, including the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, and Bukit Batok Nature Park.
